Yulia Tymoshenko: Gas contracts with Russia will be signed by the end of 2008

Ukraine will sign gas contracts with Russia by the end of the current year. Prime Minister of Ukraine Yulia Tymoshenko stated at a press conference today.

Yulia Tymoshenko noted that the only reason for the delay in signing gas contracts is the fact that some officials are interested in retaining corruption at the gas market in the state. “I believe that Ukraine’s stand is very clear, comprehensible: we don’t want to have any corrupted mediators between Russia and Ukraine as RosUkrEnergo”.

According to the Head of Government, the head of “Naftohaz of Ukraine” NJSC and his team are negotiating every day with Russian colleagues concerning the conclusion of mentioned contracts, “I believe that we achieve the problem solving and sing contracts by the end of the year”.

The Prime Minister also noted that at present the Russian gas price for Ukraine is essentially lower as against Europe, that’s why in 2009 we’ll face “some increase”. Yulia Tymoshenko stressed that increase to market prices would take place gradually, within 3 years, in accordance with agreements between prime ministers of Ukraine and Russia.
