Tymoshenko asks EU to assess Ukraine-Russia gas deal
Prime Minister Yulia Tymoshenko has applied to the European Union for an expert assessment of the gas contracts between the Naftohaz Ukrainy national oil and gas company and Russia’s Gazprom gas monopoly.
Tymoshenko sent an official letter to EC President Jose Manuel Barroso with this request as she met with ambassadors of the G-7 countries (the USA, Canada, Japan, Britain, Germany, France, and Italy).
Prime Minister Tymoshenko said she was confident that experts of the European Union will find the gas contracts as lawful and beneficial for Ukraine.
Tymoshenko assured the ambassadors there would be no problems for the European Union regardless of the political discussions about the gas contracts. She said Ukraine remains a reliable partner transiting natural gas to Europe.
«I want to assure all of you that the contracts are being fulfilled and there is no force capable of breaking them... I do believe there will be no unpleasant surprises for the European Union from Russia and Ukraine,» Prime Minister Yulia Tymoshenko said.
Tymoshenko further noted that the gas agreement with Russia is an important element in the energy security of Ukraine. She said politics has been removed from the gas relations with Russia by the signing of the agreements.
The National Security and Defense Council advocates assessment of the contracts between Naftohaz Ukrainy and Gazprom by European experts.
The Secretariat of President Viktor Yushchenko said Prime Minister Tymoshenko was unlikely to apply to the European Union for the assessment of the gas contracts.
On January 19, 2009, the Naftohaz Ukrainy national oil and gas company and Russia’s Gazprom gas monopoly signed contracts on deliveries of natural gas to Ukraine and transit of natural gas through Ukraine’s gas transportation system for 2009-2019.
