Viktor Baloga: At the time - the develop a new global strategy in the use of nuclear energy
The international community must develop a new global strategy in the use of nuclear energy and nuclear safety, given the lessons of Chernobyl and Fukusima. The need for such efforts of the world community was praised in a speech of the Minister of Emergency Situations Viktor Baloga at the International Conference on Ukrainian-American cooperation in the field of nuclear energy and security in Washington. The official said about Ukraine's readiness to take active part in this process, using accumulated considerable experience and available opportunities.
Viktor Baloga stated that nuclear accidents like the Chernobyl catastrophe would be able to overcome by joint efforts of the world community, as such incidents do not recognize international boundaries.
In this context, the Minister of Emergency Situations of Ukraine has drawn an attention of American partners to the need for the establishment and implementation of new projects to further neutralize the dangerous consequences of the Chornobyl explosion. In particular, spoke about improving radiation safety at the site of the station, and in more general terms - about the physical protection of nuclear materials in Ukraine within the framework of agreements reached with the international community in connection with the final closure of Chornobyl NPP.
International conference in Washington organized by the Ukrainian Congress Committee of America with the assistance of the Embassy of Ukraine in the USA and the financial support of Sen. Richard Lugar. The meeting was attended and addressed a number of ambassadors from different countries to the United States, influential congressmen, representatives of the Ukrainian Congress Committee and NGOs which representing the interests of the Ukrainian diaspora in the USA.
In particular, the Ambassador of Japan in the USA Ichiro Fudzhysaki in his speech thanked Ukrainian side for the "invaluable assistance" provided by Ukraine in the aftermath of the accident at the nuclear power plant in Fukushima.
