Ukraine, EU to discuss modernization of Ukraine’s gas transport system
Ukraine and the European Union will hold an international conference on the modernization of the gas transport system of Ukraine in Brussels, Belgium, on March 23, President Viktor Yushchenko told a joint press conference with President of the European Commission Jose Manuel Barroso in Brussels.
Yushchenko said the conference will concentrate on modernization of the country’s gas transport system and attraction of the international investments in the project.
Yushchenko also said it would be important to Ukraine to join the European Energy Charter Treaty, in 2009.
Andriy Honcharuk, the deputy head of the Secretariat of President Viktor Yushchenko, said the a working group has been set up with the Fuel and Energy Ministry to draft documents and Ukrainian proposals to the conference.
Honcharuk said Yushchenko can take part in the conference if the European Union is represented at the conference by top-ranking officials.
President Yushchenko advocates the integration of the Ukrainian gas transport system with the European markets.
