Russia and Ukraine to sign gas contracts on Monday

Russia and Ukraine will sign documents on terms of the supply of Russian gas to Ukraine and terms of the gas transit to the countries of Europe on Monday. Prime Minister of Ukraine Yulia Tymoshenko stated during their common with Prime Minister of the Russian Federation coming to the press summing up negotiations lasting for five hours. “Our talks were a real challenge but we have achieved agreement enabling us to sign all necessary documents,” Yulia Tymoshenko stressed.

The Prime Minister said that on the outcomes of talks the NJSC Naftogaz of Ukraine and Gazprom had been instructed to draft all necessary documents till Monday and draw up them according to achieved agreements.

The Head of Ukrainian Government assured that as soon as the above-mentioned documents are signed the gas transit to the countries of Europe would be resumed at once. “Immediately after all the documents on the transit and purchase of gas are signed, all the routes for gas transit and gas supplies to Europe will be restored,” Yulia Tymoshenko emphasized.

In his turn, Head of Government of the RF Volodymyr Putin stated that agreements had been achieved during talks concerning that Ukraine and Russia transfer to a European pricing formula in all issues on gas supplies. He also told that the sides agreed that Ukraine would have a discount of 20% on condition that the preferential tariff for piping Russian gas to European consumers through Ukraine in 2009 remains in force and that the price for piping will be the price of 2008. Prime Minister of Russia noted that from 1 January 2010 Ukraine and Russia would entirely move to price and tariff formation fully in accordance with European standards.

“In the very near future, transit - and the Ukrainian side has assured us to this effect - will resume," Volodymyr Putin said.
