Price for Russian natural gas for Ukraine in 2010-2011 - is a matter of future negotiations

Prime Minister of Ukraine Yulia Tymoshenko told briefing that price for Russian natural gas is calculated for all European countries according to one formula: “An absolutely standard formula is applied for all the countries. Ukraine had no special formula”. She has reminded that gas price for Ukraine in 2009 was also calculated according to the standard formula but Russian side gave a 20 percent discount for our state which had allowed us to reach average cost of gas at the sum of 228.8 dollars per one thousand cubic meters. As regards the gas price in 2010-2011, the price to be fixed at the talks between Ukraine and Russia in the future: “The price for another two years - 2010-2011 – is a matter of talks. In particular, when the 2010-2011 price to be calculated, then we carry on negotiations on reduced prices”.

The Prime Minister views critical claims of the President of Ukraine about Ukraine’s obtaining of too high price for the Russian natural gas, groundless. According to her, the Head of State repeatedly held negotiations with the high officials of Russia but they being not successful. “All these talks resulted in the price for gas supplies to Ukraine for 2009 at 450 dollars per one thousand cubic meters and the transit price – 1.6 dollars one thousand cubic meters. I have succeeded to stop this negative list of events and assure the Russian leaders to return to the Memorandum and to get for Ukraine the price of 228.8 dollars instead of 450 dollars per one thousand cubic meters. At the same time the process gas for transit is by 25 dollars cheaper. If the President could succeed better, nobody impeded him”.

Besides, Yulia Tymoshenko stressed, there is no need to hold a session of the NSDC on gas issue because this was required when the crisis was at its height. “This dispute was artificially started to preserve the corruption mediator RosUkrEnergo. I am very glad the crisis if over now and there is no need to summon the NSDC,” the Head of Government claimed. Yulia Tymoshenko also declared that she would keep the President from returning the corruption mediator between Gazprom and Naftogaz.
