Mykola Azarov: Cooperation with Turkmenistan is a significant step towards energy independence

Prime Minister Mykola Azarov has instructed immediately to prepare the necessary documents for the implementation of the agreements in energy sector of the President of Ukraine during his visit to Turkmenistan.

“I instruct the vice Prime Minister Yuriy Boyko, Minister of Energy and Coal Industry Eduard Stavyskyi and Minister of Economic Development and Trade Igor Prasolov immediately to begin developing documents necessary to implement the arrangements of the President of Ukraine,” PM said during a meeting of the Cabinet on February 20, 2013.

Mykola Azarov stressed that today there is the recovery and dynamic expansion of cooperation with Turkmenistan, an old and important partner of Ukraine.

According to him, a noticeable result of the visit of the President of Ukraine, which took place last week, was the strengthening of cooperation in the energy sector. “It should be noted that our countries thanks to the Agreement on the FTA between the CIS countries, which defined the principle of equal access to pipelines, receive opportunities to join forces to supply natural gas from Turkmenistan both for Ukraine's needs and for export to Europe,” he said.

The PM recalled that during the visit of the President was signed a Memorandum of Understanding between the Naftogaz of Ukraine National Joint Stock Company and the Turkmengaz State Concern, where, in particular comes about the possibility to update gas supplies to Ukraine and Europe, as well as exploration of fields in Turkmenistan

“This is a significant step towards energy independence of Ukraine, diversification of gas supplies. The new energy strategy is not just words but the actions. We focus on the fact that the main result of the sovereign energy policy of the President and the Government will be securing of fair utility rates for our citizens and providing Ukrainian companies with gas at a fair price. However, in our opinion, it will promote the search for mutually beneficial formula of cooperation in gas sphere with Russian partners,” Mykola Azarov stressed.
