Diesel engines beat hybrids on the ‘green car’ market
On April 1 the Volkswagen Polo was named 2010 World Car of the Year at this year’s New York Auto Show. 59 judges from 25 countries chose the winner of the show in four categories. Announced at the New York Auto Show, the annual World Car of the Year Awards recognize the year’s most outstanding vehicles based on merit, value, safety, environmental impact, significance and emotional appeal. That wasn’t the only award for Volkswagen.
The automaker’s BlueMotion models (Polo, Golf and Passat) were awarded Green Car of the Year by World Car jurors, defeating two other finalists — the Honda Insight and the Toyota Prius.
At a press conference hosted by the New York International Auto Show, the Audi R8 V10 was named the 2010 World Performance Car and the Chevrolet Camaro won the award for 2010 World Car Design of the Year.
"World Car of the Year (WCOTY) is a program initiated, organized and conducted by automotive journalists from all over the world and sponsored by the Japanese Bridgestone Corporation and the German BASF SE. Thanks to the aforementioned generous sponsors the program became the most prominent among a host of other similar contests and its results have a major impact on the global car market," said Oleh Nazarenko, General Director of the Ukrainian Association of Car Importers and Dealers.
